Cecelia Reid organized Chalk Walk 4 Justice shortly after participating in a local protest. Unfortunate for protesters, things turned towards violence. Cecelia marched away with a charge to promote positive action: writing in pastel chalk along the Oceanfront Boardwalk. Cecelia writes her thoughts and feelings, while encouraging others to write messages of hope. She started her campaign along the south end of the Virginia Beach Boardwalk.

June 1: Governor Ralph Northam issues a curfew for Virginia Beach after a Sunday Night protest

June 3: Cecelia starts Chalk Walk 4 Justice at 17th-19th Streets of Virginia Beach Boardwalk

June 4: Cecelia continues to educate and spread awareness at the Oceanfront, promoting the core values of community, unity, and love. Chalk Walk 4 Justice moves to 14-16th Streets of Virginia Beach Boardwalk

June 5: Chalk Walk 4 Justice moves to 13-15th Streets of Virginia Beach Boardwalk. Daron “The Tcha” Moore records and releases “Cries of the Unheard,” spoken word video on site.

June 6: Chalk Walk 4 Justice moves to 11-13th Streets of Virginia Beach Boardwalk & 19th Street “The Alley.” Artist Beth Barnes chalks #BLM Wonder Woman.

June 7: Chalk Walk 4 Justice moves to 1st Street Jetty of Virginia Beach Boardwalk and joins Paddle Out to Honor George Floyd.

June 8: Chalk Walk 4 Justice moves to 3rd Street of Virginia Beach Boardwalk.

June 9: Chalk Walk 4 Justice moves to 4th Street of Virginia Beach Boardwalk. Oceanfront 9 praises Cecelia for her efforts to spread messages on Boardwalk.

June 10: Chalk Walk 4 Justice moves to 5th Street of Virginia Beach Boardwalk. Superstar Pharrell Williams voiced support for Oceanfront 9 post circulated on social media that calls for the city paint “Black Lives Matter” on the Boardwalk.

June 11: Chalk Walk 4 Justice moves to 6th Street of Virginia Beach Boardwalk. Archie Boone, founder of HOLLA INC. joins Chalk Walk 4 Justice to help organize a mass movement to mobilize artist to paint the Boardwalk.

June 12: Chalk Walk 4 Justice moves to 7th Street of Virginia Beach Boardwalk. Gabe Niles joins Chalk Walk 4 Justice Movement to solidify support to paint “Black Lives Matter” in Norfolk, VA. Dollar Tree sponsors Chalk Walk 4 Justice. The Virginian-Pilot writes an article titled, “Without council support, Virginia Beach manager said the city won’t paint Black Lives Matter on the Boardwalk. Virginian-Pilots breaks new that “Chalk art for justice is spreading down the Boardwalk.

June 13: Chalk Walk 4 Justice moves to 31-35th Streets of Virginia Beach Boardwalk to host Boardwalk Art Show 2020.
